CULIACAN, Mexico – Two municipal police officers and a pair of gunmen were killed in a shootout in the northwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa, authorities said.

The clash occurred early Saturday when the gunmen tried to kill the police chief of the town of Choix and his bodyguards repelled the attack, sources with the state Attorney General’s Office said.

A total of 13 people were killed in different violent incidents Friday in Sinaloa, one of the Mexican states hardest hit in recent years by drug-related violence.

Sinaloa is the birthplace of the first generation of Mexican drug kingpins, including Joaquin “El Chapo” (Shorty) Guzman, who made Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s wealthiest people between 2009 and 2012.
