Singaporean anti-drug authorities Friday arrested a Vietnamese woman carrying 6.25 kilograms of methamphetamine at Changi Airport.

It was the second time in less than a month that a Vietnamese national has been arrested for trafficking meth in Singapore.

The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said the next day that the unnamed suspect, 22, was arrested at the airport’s Terminal 3 with meth, also known as “ice,” worth about S$1.25 million (US$977,253).

The move came after officers from Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) screened her luggage, and undertook a detailed search.

The meth was wrapped in two nylon bags hidden in the false compartments of her luggage.

She was about to leave for “a third country in the region,” said CNB, adding that this is “the largest ‘Ice’ seizure in a single operation for the year so far.”

CNB is investigating the case further.

On August 10, another Vietnamese woman named Nguyen Thi Thanh Hai, 47, was also arrested at Changi Airport for carrying 4.1 kilograms of methamphetamine.

ICA and CNB detected two slabs of the crystallized substance, estimated to be worth more than $500,000, wrapped in aluminum foil in her suitcase, which their preliminary investigations said were likely intended to be re-exported rather than sold in Singapore.

CNB said on a press release this month that Singapore seized an estimated 22.5 kilograms of methamphetamine in the first half of this year, 2.4 times higher than the total amount seized in the same period last year.

Around 79 percent of 22.5 kilograms of methamphetamine was not intended for the local market, it said.

Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, Singapore’s drug control law, those caught importing, exporting or in possession of more than 250 grams of methamphetamine are eligible for the death penalty.
