Del Rio, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents working in Eagle Pass seized more than 7 pounds of methamphetamine, with an estimated value of more than $100,000.

On Tuesday, agents from the Eagle Pass South Station were conducting immigration checkpoint operations on Highway 57 when they encountered a commercial travel van, containing several passengers, en route to San Antonio. When agents asked the passengers to exit the van they observed a handbag, under one of their seats, which was unclaimed. A search of the handbag revealed five cellophane-wrapped bundles.

Agents determined that the handbag belonged to passenger Martha Alicia Lopez-Menchaca, 51, a Mexican national and lawful permanent resident in the United States. The bundles contained a total of 7.27 pounds of methamphetamine worth an estimated $109,050. The case was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for federal prosecution of felony drug possession.

The Del Rio Border Patrol Sector is part of the South Texas Campaign, which leverages federal, state and local resources to combat transnational criminal organizations. For Fiscal Year 2013, the Del Rio Sector has seized over 31,500 pounds of illegal narcotics worth an estimated $26.6 million dollars.
