Nogales, Arizona – A local woman and a young teen were arrested in separate incidents Tuesday at the Port of Nogales for attempting to smuggle an estimated $178,200 worth of methamphetamine and cocaine into the United States.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers first referred a 50-year-old woman for a secondary inspection of her Buick sedan. She was subsequently arrested after a service canine alerted to the presence of drugs in the dashboard — 10 packages of methamphetamine valued at nearly $87,000. The vehicle and drugs were processed for seizure.

A few hours later, officers referred a 14-year-old boy for additional inspection as he attempted to cross into the U.S. through the Morley Pedestrian Gate. When officers checked a bag of what appeared to be grocery items, some of the contents caught their attention. After a CBP service canine indicated a presence of narcotics, officers opened cans labeled as “Maiz Para Pozole.” Inside the cans, officers discovered six packages of drugs containing nearly six pounds of methamphetamine and almost six grams of cocaine, valued at more than $90,000 and $1,200 respectively. The drugs were processed for seizure.

Both individuals were referred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
