On Thursday, Reynaldo Garcia, 23, was indicted by a Jefferson Parish grand jury for raping a young girl over a nearly two-year period, beginning when the victim was only 12-years-old. The Guatemalan national raped the girl on about 20 separate occasions, according to court documents.
During a preliminary hearing in March, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Det. David Canas testified that Garcia confessed to the encounters, and that he was aware of the girl’s age.
The Times-Picayune reported:
During a preliminary examination in March, Canas testified that at times, the girl said Garcia picked her up in the mornings at her bus stop and had sex with her in his car before he dropped her off at school. She said she knew him as Oliver Garcia, the name he used on his Facebook page.
The girl’s mother had been suspicious that something was happening but was met with her daughter’s denials, the detective said. The mother confirmed the alleged rapes after finding text messages on her phone, Canas testified. She then called police.
The victim reportedly contracted a sexually transmitted disease from Garcia.
Garcia has been charged with aggravated rape and is currently being held in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.
