Salton City, Calif. — On Tuesday, El Centro sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio station apprehended a suspected narcotics smuggler at the Highway 86 checkpoint and seized 2.8 pounds of methamphetamine.

The incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m., when a 53-year-old male taxi driver and his 16-year-old female passenger approached the Border Patrol checkpoint in located between Westmorland and Salton City. At primary inspection, agents found discrepancies with the immigration documents she presented and promptly referred the 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis to secondary inspection. A search of the vehicle and driver were negative for narcotics. Upon further questioning, the female admitted to presenting fraudulent documents and was placed under arrest. Apprehending agents noticed a large bulge near her lower back which subsequently revealed seven packages of methamphetamine plastic wrapped to her body.

The methamphetamine had an estimated street value of more than $66,000. The female and the methamphetamine were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The El Centro sector’s Community Awareness Campaign is a simple and effective program to raise public awareness on the indicators of crime and other threats. We encourage public and private sector employees to remain vigilant and play a key role in keeping our country safe. Please report any suspicious activity to the Border Community Threat Hotline at (800) 901-2003
