Topeka — Sixty people have been indicted on federal drug trafficking charges in indictments unsealed today in U.S. District Court in Topeka. As of Wednesday, there are 42 defendants in custody.
All 60 defendants are charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, a felony that carries a penalty upon conviction of not less than 10 years and not more than life in federal prison and a fine up to $10 million. Of those charged, four defendants also are charged with one count of distribution of methamphetamine, and three defendants are charged with one count of possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine.
The charges are contained in five separate indictments unsealed today after law enforcement officers served arrest warrants on those charged. The indictments are the product of two investigations led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, in cooperation with the Topeka Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
All the crimes are alleged to have taken place in the District of Kansas at various times, beginning prior to Nov. 1, 2009, and continuing until as late as May 31, 2011.
Grissom thanked the following agencies that assisted in this investigation and further assisted in serving arrest warrants: Drug Enforcement Administration, Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, United States Marshals Service, Kansas Highway Patrol, Bureau of Alcohol and Beverage Control, the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office, and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
